Termini Imerese Thursday September 2nd 2010

Off to see the town where my Dad was born and lived for the first 17 years of his life.
The town is called Termini Imerese and is about 30 minutes from Sicily's capital, Palermo.
David, D'arcy and I had a fleeting visit 5 years ago and found it charming and the landscape gorgeous.
It seems to have changed a bit since our last visit, but it's changed immensely since Papa was last here in 1978! He was not impressed with his old town at all, in fact, I can't even repeat the words he used to describe it. It has changed from a charming town into a bustling metropolis, and unfortunately, most of the little shops and businesses he remembered from his childhood are now long gone. Even the Grand Hotel seems to be a little worse for wear these days.
Still, the photos show a beautiful place, with some gorgeous buildings and I'm still blown away by the way the mountains seem to emerge from the sea below, it's quite amazing.

An old church with a mosaic duomo on the way from Termini Basso (lower) to Termini Alto (higher)

Street view, with Mount San Cologero in the back ground.

My Dad in Termini Alto with Mount San Cologero in the back ground and a view of the harbour.
